Sub89 opened in October 2009 with a sold out live show from Chase & Status. Situated on Friar Street in the town centre opposite Friars Walk in a room previously held by the Jongleurs comedy brand, the team at Sub89 have developed the space to host a wide variety of regular live music and club events over the past 3 and a half years.
From early gigs with The Damned, The Buzzcocks, Alabama 3, Skindred, and Babyshambles, through to sold out shows with Adam Ant, Public Image Limited, and Reel Big Fish, catching people like Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg, and Bastille right before they got huge, hosting blues legend Robert Cray, New-wave/Industrial legend Gary Numan, Punk legends Stiff Little Fingers, and metalcore monsters Architects.
As well as all the live music, Sub89 has hosted a variety of DJ led clubnights. Seeing sets from the likes of 2Manydjs, Skream, Andy C, DJ Yoda, Mr Scruff, Marky, Netsky, Subfocus, Erol Alkan, Disclosure, and most recently with Duke Dumont and Shadowchild, it’s fair to say the team have a great passion for music, as does Reading itself. Sub 89 has staked its place as Reading best purpose built medium sized live music venue.
