As we approach Caversham Festival 2014 we can’t help but look forward to some low-down lulling from Backbone Blues, or Dutty Moonshine’s sure-to-be-swingin’ set. But what’s really making a spectacle of our festival this year is the addition of the Theatre Corner, the walkabout performances and The Fortress, curated by the brilliant and local Beautiful Creatures Theatre.
For the first time ever Caversham Festival will have its very own Theatre Corner presenting a programme of poetry, theatre, comedy, dance, music and cabaret for all ages. All times for performances and acts can be found here in the Caversham festival 2014 Programme.

The Fortress
Beautiful Creatures are Reading’s only professional outdoor theatre company, and have been making contemporary visual indoor and outdoor theatre for local and national audiences since 2006. This year, the company are bringing a brand new Theatre Corner to Caversham Festival, filled with theatreical performances, magicians, music, walkabout performance and a brand new cabaret tent, of comedy and family entertainment.
Beautiful Creatures Theatre are also premiering their brand new outdoor dance show, funded by the Arts Council England.
With 5 breathtaking contemporary dancers and acrobats, they tell the powerful story of loss, hope and regeneration. The show takes place around 5 enormous chimes that are pitched to a particular bird song, and resonate out across the landscape, accompanied by a soundtrack composed by a local musician. These chimes are the only ones in the country, and possibly the world, and they, along with some cutting edge choreography forms the festival finale, both Saturday 7pm and Sunday 6.30pm, at Christchurch Meadows. The show tells the story of an ancient community under threat, as imagined in the mind of an archaeologist trying to save the site, which is due to be redeveloped. The community, then and now in spirit, are fighting against the threat of destruction, and learning the power of solidarity.
This unique and beautiful piece will go on to tour the UK in 2015. More information on Beautiful Creatures Theatre can be found here.
